Hi Julia,
If you are a student with limited funds, take a pass on the Vince James work...for NOW.
Check your library, if they don't have the following books, ask that they get them...and they CAN through inter-loan library technology.
Or go to abebooks, or google them...but the point is this:
Vincent James' work is excellent, IF you have an understanding of how direct response works...it is a good "basic" manual, with some good details. So YES, it should be on your bookshelf...eventually.
But before you invest in that, read these:
http://www.amazon.com/Successful-Direct-Marketing-Methods-Seventh/dp/product-description/0658001450
The late Bob Stone wrote the "Bible" on Direct Response...start here.
Then read:
http://www.amazon.com/How-Get-Rich-Mail-Order/dp/0879803738/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-2024278-0646559?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1192709586&sr=1-1
And the books on this Amazon site, the ones that they say customers also bought...
READ Cossman's work (and as an aside, Harvey Brody who worked WITH {not for} Joe Cossman for a decade wrote the classics on "Toll Positions" and the "Classic Take Off", but his books are rare and now expensive, if you can even find them)...
And then READ this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Seven-Steps-Freedom-How-Escape/dp/1884889018/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-2024278-0646559?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1192709765&sr=1-1
And also the books listed as the ones customers also bought...
YOU could buy almost all these books used for less than the cost of the Vincent James work...but you can probably get most for FREE or at very low cost if you work with your library.
The highlights of "Vince James" is he gets the AUTO DING going on the credit cards...sometimes called continuity programs, auto ship, recurring billing...bottom line...
DING your customer's credit card every month, one way or the other...and he details some pretty shady ways to do it.
Get his stuff NEXT year, after you have a basic understanding of how the industry works, and how NOT to do it...you don't want to spend any time in a jail cell do you?
And with the Internet, a great amount of this work can be had for free...but start with your local library, they'd love to help you out.
So, my advice....BUY IT ALL...but be smart and get what you need for free first, then build your library IF you stay interested in the subject, that is.
Good luck in your ventures,
Gordon Alexander gjabiz
